For some couples, their dream wedding includes a winter wonderland backdrop and the holiday season. However, they hesitate to set the winter date because they think planning it will be too difficult. We’ve got great news—there’s nothing to be afraid of! In general, planning an outdoor winter wedding is very similar to planning an outdoor wedding overall, with just a few extra necessities.
Get creative with winter accessories.
Outdoor weddings in the winter can be a magical, scenic event, but that also means spending some time out in the cold. Be prepared for the ceremony by layering up and investing in some winter wear. The bride and bridesmaids will appreciate some layers under their skirts, and fashionable shawls, cowls, or capes will be perfect to keep warm. For the grooms and groomsmen, consider different fabric like velvet for the jacket. It should be easy to take off the layers and winter wear for when you go indoors for the reception.
Inform your guests and have a coat check.
Make sure your invitations let guests know they’ll need to bundle up for the ceremony. You can even hand out some complementary hand warmers just to make sure everyone stays cozy. Then, when the event moves inside, setting up a coat check will help ensure everyone’s coats are accounted for—especially if you’re planning to move tables aside for a dance floor. Your guests will appreciate that extra detail.
Be prepared for inclement weather.
When planning an outdoor wedding, you should always have an alternate plan if the weather takes a turn. Coordinate with the hotel your guests are staying at so they have transportation to and from the venue. Depending on the type of snow that falls, it could be a beautiful opportunity or a signal to take it inside. Coordinate with your venue in case the weather is not safe for you and your guest to be outside.
Take advantage of your venue’s outdoor features.
If your venue allows a reception that can be both inside and outside, then take advantage of the extra space. For example, at Hidden Greens our patio will allow for setting up a tent outside with a few heaters so guests can get some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of a snow-covered landscape.
We hope these tips help as you’re planning your outdoor winter wedding. While our 2021 weekends are filling up, we still have some availability for interested couples! Contact Hidden Greens Event Venue to schedule a tour and ask about availability.
